The Rt. Reverend Michael Maxwell,
Bishop of Barbados
The Right Rev. Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell is the 14th Bishop of the Diocese of Barbados. He was selected by the House of Bishops in November 2018 and ordained and consecrated on the 26th January 2019, the Feast Day of Saints Timothy and Titus, at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium, Wildey, St Michael.
Following his studies at Codrington College, St John, and graduating with a B.A. in Theology and a Diploma in Pastoral Studies, Bishop Maxwell entered the sacred ministry on the 30th June 1997 when he was ordained a deacon in the Church of St Mary, Bridgetown, St Michael. On the 24th February 1998, he was then ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of St. Michael and All Angels, Bridgetown, St Michael.
Bishop Maxwell formerly held the position of rector of the Church of St Jude, St George from January 2000 to April 2008 and of the Church of Holy Trinity, St Philip from April 2008 to December 2018. During his twenty-one years of ministry, prior to becoming bishop, he also served as chaplain to the Anglican Youth Ministry Service and the Barbados Church Army, as chair of the Christian Formation Commission and the Evangelism Commission and was a member of Synod Council, the Commission on Ministry and the Finance Committee.
Outside of his parish ministry, Bishop Maxwell taught Religious Education at two secondary schools and was a part-time lecturer in the Fundamentals of Christian Ministry at Codrington College, St John. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Prison After Care Committee from February 2009 to October 2013. In June 2018, he was appointed as an Independent Senators in the Parliament of Barbados but after being called to the episcopate, he resigned this post in December 2018.
In addition to holding a B.A. in Theology, Bishop Maxwell holds a B.Sc. in Accounting from the University of the West Indies and a M.A. in Applied Theology from Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham, England.
Bishop Maxwell is the son of the late Archdeacon Malcolm Maxwell and Mrs Gloria Maxwell. He is married to Mrs Dawn Holder-Maxwell and has two sons, Christopher and Michael-John.
